A host of safety systems operate in the SL-Class to help prevent accidents. Should the worst come to the worst, however, occupant safety measures come into play, providing protection for both vehicle occupants and other road users. Occupant protection comes in the form of a high-stability safety passenger cell and standard-specification front airbags, which can be deployed in two stages to match the severity of the impact. Front sidebags (rear sidebags available as an option), pelvisbags (for the front seats) and windowbags are also on board. And the kneebag can help further reduce the driver’s risk of injury in an accident. Enhanced side protection is also provided by head/thorax sidebags (side airbags with additional head protection) for the driver and front-passenger doors.

A sensor-controlled roll-over bar extends in a split-second and if the vehicle overturns while the roof is open, the roll-over bar can help protect the occupants as best as possible.
