Quality and beauty create a feeling of true comfort. The S-Class interior follows this concept by favouring carefully selected, perfectly harmonising and skilfully crafted materials. And the design of all equipment and appointment elements was examined in terms of both their functionality and aesthetic appeal. An example of this is the centre console with fine wood trim, which is also used for the doors and rear armrests.

The multifunction steering wheel has also been redesigned. It is covered in fine nappa leather and available as an option in wood/leather. The ergonomically designed front and rear seats are upholstered in leather as standard in the long-wheelbase version. They are also optionally available with the PASSION leather package or Exclusive PASSION leather (standard with S 600 and S 65 AMG). PASSION leather was specially developed for the S-Class. It is an unembossed, lightly coated smooth leather with a natural appearance and an exceptionally soft touch and feel. The instrument panel and door interior panelling are also covered in ARTICO man-made leather. The stitching in contrasting colours is precisely finished and demonstrates a precise attention to detail.

The colour schemes in the vehicle interior are harmoniously coordinated. The following combinations are available: alpaca grey/basalt grey, cashmere beige/savannah beige, chestnut brown/black, sahara beige/black and black/black.

The optional ambient lighting emphasises the interior design with the three colour schemes "solar" (amber-coloured) "neutral" (white) and "polar" (ice-blue), ensuring pleasant light conditions for night driving (standard for S 400 HYBRID, S 600 and S 65 AMG).

A narrow band of light fed by LEDs extends along the wood trim strips of the four doors and instrument panel. The ambient lighting creates a distinctive atmosphere on board and makes the interior seem more spacious and comfortable. The ambient lighting can be left on while driving – it will not hamper the driver's vision.

Using the COMAND multimedia system, you can set the brightness of the ambient lighting to five different levels to suit your personal preference. You will even be welcomed by the ambient lighting: when you open the doors, the light band lights up to the brightest level; after the doors are closed it is then dimmed to your selected setting.
