It can make effective use of the valuable seconds that are often squandered when the system recognises a possible accident. ESP® and BAS sensors and those from other systems can register critical driving scenarios such as noticeable oversteer/understeer, critical steering manoeuvres at high speeds, panic braking and emergency stops.
If the PRE-SAFE® system detects a typical pre-crash situation, the side windows and sliding sunroof can be closed automatically and the front-passenger seat moved to an "optimum" crash position. The chambers in the side bolsters of the active multicontour seats can be inflated to stabilise the occupants and allow them to follow the movement of the vehicle more effectively. The optional PRE-SAFE® brake system can provide additional assistance. In addition to emitting visual/audible signals, the PRE-SAFE® brake can independently initiate partial braking if the driver’s reaction is insufficient. The driver also receives a haptic warning and is prompted to take action. Should the driver still not react sufficiently, the PRE-SAFE® brake can initiate a full brake application. In this way the system makes a significant contribution to avoiding collisions or reducing the severity of an impact.
PRE-SAFE® underlines Mercedes-Benz's commitment to enhanced road safety based on innovative technologies.
